The position profile below calls for the successful candidate to have a substantial knowledge of, and exposure to, the issues faced by competency-based medical education, distributed medical education, to possess significant experience in the health care, continuous quality improvement initiatives, and academic sectors, to be self-motivated and self-directed, and to possess superior interpersonal, facilitation, communication, management and problem-solving skills.

Reporting

The Urology Competence By Design and Continuous Quality Improvement (CBD and CQI) Lead reports to the Program Director, Urology.

Responsabilités

Summary of Functions

  • Oversees the implementation and operation of Competence By Design and Continuous Quality Improvement initiatives at the program level
  • Approves and ensures assessment tools and strategies create an environment for fair, objective, comprehensive assessment of each resident’s competence
  • Builds the capacity and knowledge of program faculty knowledge related to competency-based assessment

Educational Responsibilities

Oversees work plan for ongoing CBD review including:

  • Leads academic and clinical curricular design and change in collaboration with the Program Director and Curriculum Instructional Designer(s) and other faculty
  • Develops an in-depth understanding of Competence by Design, EPAs, and approaches to assessment
  • Provides direction to the Competence Committee Chair to lead an effective assessment committee structure
  • Develops an in-depth understanding of the electronic assessment platform (e-portfolio) being used
  • Oversees program specific faculty development and mentoring of the competence committee members, ensuring a robust resident review, decision/promotion and feedback process
  • Closely follows the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons changes/suggestions and documents relating to competency assessment
  • Recruits and supports Academic Advisors who are responsible to coach residents to meet their individualized learning plans

Works with the Program Director to guide aspects of the accreditation requirements of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) for the NOSM University (NOSM U) Urology Residency Program to ensure that it meets or exceeds the identified standards:

  • Ensure the program continues implementation of the Competency-Based Education Model as per the accreditation standards.
  • Assist the Program Director to ensure the program meets the Standards of Accreditation as determined by the RCPSC.
  • Assist in the oversight of the accreditation review includes a plan to implement an effective resident assessment and promotion process in accordance with NOSM U Postgraduate Education policies and in collaboration with the Chair of the Competence Committee for NOSM U Urology.
  • Oversight of the accreditation review includes a process improvement plan to ensure enhanced learning and remediation programs for residents with academic and professional challenges as necessary.
  • Assist the Program Director to ensure the accreditation program plan addresses appropriate support for residents including safety, career counseling, stress management, and identify other resources for resident wellbeing as needed.
  • Assist the Program Director to ensure the accreditation program plan has a process is in place to assist with the ongoing review and evaluation of the residency program including educational objectives, research curriculum, academic sessions, and clinical curriculum consistent with the requirements of the RCPSC and NOSM U.
  • Assist the Program Director to ensure the accreditation program plan identifies a continuous quality improvement approach to resident placements, other educational experiences, and program development so that residents are prepared to begin practice in communities in Canada, including northern and rural areas.
  • Assist in the preparation, plan, and assist in the implementation of internal and external reviews for accreditation of the Urology Program.
  • Act as a surveyor for internal reviews at NOSM U, as requested.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Participates in competence committee meetings
  • Oversees the work of the Stage Leads if applicable
  • Member of the RPC with regular and consistent attendance required.
  • Member of the Urology Competence Committee with regular and consistent attendance
  • Represents the program and communicates with PGME and PGEC as required in relation to CBD initiatives
  • Program engagement is essential (regular and consistent participation in faculty development events, meetings, responding to faculty/staff/resident communication within 7 days of request)

Qualifications

Éducation

  • A physician licensed in Ontario, practicing in Northern Ontario, with certification
  • Training in Continuous Quality Improvement

Connaissances, Compétences et Capacités

  • A current faculty appointment (or eligibility for same) with NOSM U
  • In depth knowledge of competency-based medical education, workplace assessments and appropriate feedback
  • Significant experience in the health care and academic sectors
  • Self-motivated and directed
  • Experience with the accreditation process
  • Significant experience with developing, implementing, and evaluating continuous quality improvement initiatives
  • Superior interpersonal, communication, management and problem-solving skills

Langue

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
  • French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset

Remuneration

  • As per the stipendiary faculty remuneration process

Time Commitment

  • Two (2.0) days per month
