Overview

The Clinical Sciences Divisional Leadership has the overall responsibility of appointing/reappointing clinical faculty, providing faculty feedback, coaching faculty to promotion, and performing faculty investigations. Additionally, the Clinical Sciences Divisional Leadership supports clinical faculty members with their teaching, research, academic contributions, wellness and mentorship.

One mechanism the Clinical Sciences Divisional Leadership uses to recruit clinical faculty is the academic registration process as outlined by the CPSO. The academic registration (AR) route was developed to allow medical schools to work collaboratively with hospitals to recruit physicians for academic positions who do not meet the usual requirements for an academic practice certificate, which requires certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians of Canada. Proceeding with an Academic Registration places unique stipulations on those who are recruiting, which would not otherwise exist with a physician recruited through the standard routes. This route has very specific requirements and conditions, which are outlined below.

An Academic Registrant (AR) must be appointed at the level of Assistant Professor or higher (see Faculty Appointment and Reappointment Policy). If they are Assistant Professors, they must be promoted to Associate Professor within 7 years (see Policy and Procedures Governing Joint and Stipendiary Faculty Promotions), pass their licensing exam, or be granted an independent practice certificate of registration  by the CPSO.

Until an AR can practice independently (or is promoted to Associate Professor), NOSM U must provide annual reports to the CPSO that attest to the AR’s clinical competence, sufficiency in meeting their academic requirements and progress towards promotion.

The CPSO requires clinical supervision of the AR. This supervisor, who must be acceptable to NOSM U and the CPSO, will provide the annual report of clinical competence as outlined in the CPSO Clinical Supervision Guidelines.

When a recruiting hospital chooses to work with NOSM U to recruit an Academic Registrant, the hospital agrees to and commits that the candidate will devote a minimum of 20% of their work time to academic, administrative, research, and scholarly work.

The Academic Registrant Lead reports to the Associate Dean responsible for clinical faculty.
