About NOSM Education Research Communities

Themes and Goals


The overall theme of Rendez-Vous 2012 was “Community Participation in Education, Research and Service.” The overarching theme brought together participants involved in the following five areas:

• rural, remote and underserviced healthcare, and health professional education
• integration of the individual and population health approaches to education and service
• longitudinal integrated curricula
• community-engaged health professional education
• social accountability in the health professions education


The overall goal of Rendez-Vous 2012 was to convene health professionals, educators, students, and researchers from all parts of the world. They had the opportunity to share experiences, opportunities, and challenges of community participation in education, service, and research.

Through a variety of forums during the conference, participants’ involvement included engaged and thought provoking discussions and collaborative learning related to their perspectives of, insights in, and innovative strategies for community participation in education, research and service.



Based upon the theme of the conference – “engaging community participation in education, research, service, and the health system” – the objectives were as follows:

Engaging Communities in Health Professional Education

1. To engage in dialogue that explores community engagement approaches in planning, administering education and educational programs.

2. To disseminate models of education pertinent to community-engaged health professional education.

Engaging Communities in Service

1. To identify successful measurement tools and processes in determining the degree to which health professional schools are advancing their social accountability mandates.

2. To identify successful approaches in creating a sustainable future of community participation in healthcare.

Engaging Communities in Research

1. To identify best practices of community-engaged health professional education and research.

2. To enhance knowledge translation through defined practical applications of new ways of linking education, service, and research in rural, remote and underserviced communities.

Engaging Communities for Healthier Populations

1. To define a school’s role in developing and disseminating sustainable models, tools, and processes that support individuals and communities in taking action and responsibility for their own health.

2. To explore mechanisms for community participation and partnerships in working towards achieving health equity.
