Thunder Bay Stream

Thunder Bay Site Director: Dr. Kim Varty
Assistant Site Director: Dr. Carla Dubois,

The opportunities provided in Thunder Bay for you during your family medicine residency training experience are truly superior. Thunder Bay provides diverse hands-on training for Family Medicine residents in a closely knit medical community. You will have exposure to many different family practice styles, including solo, group, and inter-professional team based practices with many providing in-hospital care, walk-in clinics, palliative care and maternal/newborn care.

Thunder Bay is one of two host university sites for the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM). As a resident based at the Thunder Bay site you will be part of the layered learning experience for medical students training at NOSM and be able to continue developing your skillset as teachers and collaborators. NOSM Postgraduate Residency Programs, including general surgery, orthopedic surgery, internal medicine and pediatrics also have residents based in Thunder Bay which enriches the learning experience while on specialty placement and promotes professional networking. Unique to our site are the Intensive Care Unit and Infectious Disease clinical placements which are open to learners at the PGY2 level. Located in the heart of Northwestern Ontario, there are numerous placements based in rural and remote locations which learners are encouraged to experience.

We are currently transitioning to the Triple C Curriculum in Thunder Bay for our Postgraduate Family Medicine NOSM residents and this presents exciting opportunities for residents to guide their learning experience with support from clinical and academic preceptors. There are also a multitude of research opportunities available, expanding your training as a scholar.

Thunder Bay is a regional referral centre for Northwestern Ontario. The high volume tertiary care hospital, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC), is a 375-bed tertiary care academic centre offering a comprehensive range of services in state-of-the-art healthcare facilities with a fully integrated Regional Cancer Centre Program. Other medical facilities in the city include the St. Joseph’s Care Group which offers complex care, physical rehabilitation, long term care, mental health and addictions; Norwest CHC; and Thunder Bay District Health Unit.

At NOSM’s Thunder Bay site, on the shores of Lake Superior and under the watch of the Sleeping Giant, you will find a Family Medicine training experience that is unparalleled in the country. We look forward to welcoming you to our Thunder Bay NOSM family.
