Transfers of Residency Programs

There may be times in a resident’s education where they wish to transfer to another institution or internally to another program due to changes in professional interest or personal circumstances.

The following document outlines the principles and process for Transfers of Residency Programs within NOSM University, provincially and nationally.

The above document outlines how resident transfers are handled consistently within NOSM University and nationally and the procedures for residents who wish to submit a transfer request. It is very important to register your intent to transfer with the Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) Office and let us help you in this process. Postgraduate Medical Education Offices across the country mandate that communication happen among our offices versus directly with individual programs.

Transfers are always subject to a file review and interview process, available clinical capacity, and open funding. Other constraints may limit the availability of program transfers. Information on the desire to transfer is held in confidence by the PGME Office until such time as a transfer appears likely to be accepted and a release must be sought from a resident’s current program.

In addition to the National Spring Transfer Period, the NOSM University PGME Office facilitates an Internal Fall Transfer process for NOSM University residents interested in and eligible for a transfer between NOSM University residency programs. Please see below for further detail.

National Spring Transfer Period

In December of each year, the PGME Office informs NOSM University residents via The ‘Script e-newsletter of the opportunity to participate in the National Transfer Process and advising them of the principles and procedures for NOSM University residents.

Annual request deadlines for spring transfer requests:

Spring internal transfer requests- January 31st

Spring external transfer requests- March 31st

Requests and questions related to the National Spring Transfer Period can be submitted confidentially to postgrad@nosm.ca

Internal Fall Transfer Process

Eligible NOSM University residents wishing to request an internal transfer should submit their expression of interest confidentially via a completed and signed Application and Resident Consent for Release Form to the PGME Office at postgrad@nosm.ca.

The PGME office will hold the request in confidence and will begin by determining if funding capacity is available to consider the request. If it is determined that funding may be available, the office will begin working with desired programs to determine training capacity within the program. Residents are expected to review the following documents and are encouraged to reach out to postgrad@nosm.ca
