About NOSM Education Research Communities

NOSM is a member of the Training for Health Equity Network, a global community of medical schools committed to health equity. We have memoranda of understanding, which include the possibility of student, resident and faculty exchanges with a number of the schools in the network. These schools include NOSM and the following:

Walter Sisulu University

NOSM and Walter Sisulu University in Mthatha, South Africa are actively seeking to develop an equitable and meaningful exchange program. Walter Sisulu has pursued a distributed model of medical education and is currently in the process of instituting a lontitudinal rural clerkship program. A memorandum of understanding is in place and signed. We are now in the process of trying to enact and enable faculty, student, resident and interdisciplinary exchanges.

Witwatersrand University

Wit’s University as it is known, houses South Africa’s premier Medical School. The rural placements are in the northern provinces. As yet, there is no memorandum of understanding between NOSM and Wit’s but work in this area is underway. Wit’s has an established international exchange program – it usually involves a week placement at an urban ER in Johannesburg followed by a 3 week rural family medicine placement.

James Cook University

James Cook University in Australia has ties with NOSM that could facilitate student exchanges.

University of Limerick

NOSM students have travelled to Ireland for electives.
