Community Engagement

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) is a unique institution defined by a commitment to social accountability. The School pursues a culture of inclusiveness and responsiveness within the medical communities, the Northern Communities, the rural communities, and the Aboriginal and Francophone communities it serves throughout the region.
Evidence of this mandate can be found in the School’s curriculum, administrative structure, research program, student demographics, and continuing education.

To date, over 70 affiliate agreements have been signed, formalizing relations between NOSM and its many partners who provide hands-on experience for medical students in health care-facilities, hospitals, and other learning environments throughout the North. 

Additional partnerships ensure that the School’s social accountability mandate addresses the needs of Northern Ontario’s diverse cultural groups. 

The Aboriginal Affairs Unit functions as a link between the School and the Aboriginal community which provides advice to the School on research, administration and academic issues. Unit members collaborate with Aboriginal communities, assist in the recruitment of Aboriginal students, and advise the School’s administrative bodies on Aboriginal Affairs and involvement.

Similarly, the School’s Francophone Affairs Unit liaises with Northern Franco-Ontarian communities for the purpose of identifying and responding to the needs of Francophones in the ongoing development of the School.

An unwavering commitment to community engagement guides the School as it enhances participation in planning and decision-making, and raises awareness about community issues and concerns.

The mandate of the School’s Admissions Committee is to reflect the demographics of Northern Ontario in the medical school class profile.  Applicants deemed capable of succeeding in the medical program will be chosen from a broad range of backgrounds.  Applicants from within Northern Ontario, rural and remote areas in the rest of Canada, and Aboriginal and Francophone applicants will have an advantage in the admissions process.
