Statement on Free Speech
The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities requires every publicly-assisted college and university in Ontario to develop and publicly post a free speech policy by January 1, 2019, that meets a minimum standard specified by the Government of Ontario.
Given the formal affiliation that governs the relationship between the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM), Lakehead University and Laurentian University (host institutions), all NOSM students, faculty, staff, management and guests will be subject to the free speech policies of the host institutions, in accordance with the following:
As undergraduate medical students at NOSM are registered/enrolled at either host institution, the students would be covered by the host institution’s free speech policy and would follow procedures established under the university’s policy specific to where they are registered.
As NOSM occupies space on the host institutions’ campuses, and serves as the Faculty of Medicine for both universities:
- all other learners, full-time faculty and staff, who are based at NOSM at Lakehead University will be subject to Lakehead University’s policy on free speech.
- all other learners, full-time faculty and staff, who are based at NOSM at Laurentian University will be subject to Laurentian University’s policy on free speech.
Guests of NOSM at Lakehead University or NOSM at Laurentian University would also be subject to the policy that governs the campus they are attending.
This Policy does not restrict Academic Freedom entitlement derived from Collective Agreements at NOSM or otherwise.
Complaints in relation to NOSM’s execution of these policies can be brought forward to Ray Hunt, NOSM’s Chief Operating Officer at firstname.lastname@example.org or 705-662-7147.
