Overview
At the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM), research is recognized as a critical component of medical education. The research initiatives developed in partnership with the School will be internationally recognized and supported by competitive, peer-reviewed funding awarded on the basis of scientific excellence.
Research at NOSM is reflective of the School’s mandate to be socially accountable to the diverse cultures of Northern Ontario. The School’s unique research program targets areas that have a direct relevance to Northern populations.
The key theme of NOSM research is tackling the questions of importance to improving the health of the people of the North. For example, rates of diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers are much higher in Northern Ontario than in the rest of the country. In addition, many Northerners live in communities that are often more than six hours away from primary services, some even further.
The School is committed to academic freedom and research integrity and a major thrust of NOSM faculty time is dedicated to research. Opportunities for participation in research are available for individuals at all levels of education and professional development including undergraduate, post-graduate, and health care professionals interested in biomedical and health sciences.
Research scientists associated with the NOSM, universities, hospitals, and other active research organizations will become involved in specific aspects of NOSM’s research endeavors.
NOSM has two state-of-the-art research labs: one at its East Campus in Sudbury, and one at its West Campus in Thunder Bay. In addition, the School works in partnership with universities, private sector organizations, and health centres across the North to facilitate research initiatives which have a strong focus on the health issues of Northern communities.
In November, 2005, the School launched a framework which will contribute to a vibrant health research industry for Northern Ontario. Creating a Sustainable Health Research Industry in Northern Ontario is a study which was commissioned by the School to provide an overview of the strategies and potential opportunities to enable Northern Ontario’s health research industry to grow. The report sets the stage for NOSM, Northern communities, private and public sector organizations to work together so that Northern Ontario can become a major contributor to the global health research sector.
