Northern Passages Fall 2016 Now Available
It may still feel like summer, but the Fall 2016 edition of Northern Passages is now available. The Northern Ontario School of Medicine's (NOSM) newsletter highlights an inspirational story of a medical student's work with LGBTQ+ health at home and around the globe, a behind-the-scenes look at NOSM's Secretary to the Board and Academic Council, as well as how one person's generosity created a once-in-a-lifetime experience for a high school student at NOSM's Health Sciences Summer Camp.
Third-Year NOSM Medical Student Honoured with Canadian Medical Hall of Fame Award
On Monday, October 3, 2016, the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame (CMHF) recognized third-year NOSM medical student Angela Cescon with one of 17 Canadian Medical Hall of Fame Awards. The CMHF recognizes students completing their second year of medical school who demonstrate leadership through community involvement, superior interpersonal and communication skills, academic excellence, and an established interest in advancing knowledge. Cescon, originally from Sault Ste. Marie, received the Tony & Vita Altomare award, in honour of Dr. Bryce Taylor and inspired by Dr. Julio Montaner. Having completed her undergraduate studies at Queen’s University and a Master of Public Health (Global Health) at Simon Fraser University (SFU), Cescon’s Master’s research was conducted in Soweto, South Africa at the Perinatal HIV Research Unit. With a focus on missed opportunities for prevention of vertical HIV transmission, this work was recognized with SFU’s Dean of Graduate Studies Convocation Medal. Cescon then joined the Epidemiology and Population Health team at the British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS. She is an ongoing contributor in the field of clinical epidemiological HIV research in Canada, having co-authored more than 30 publications and serving as a co-investigator on several national projects. Inspired by many key mentors and colleagues along the way, Cescon remains committed to conducting research that brings meaningful impact to policy and/or practice – ultimately improving the lives of those the research is meant to benefit. Congratulations, Angela!
