PSI Visiting Scholar Discusses the Power of Health Data for Research in Northern Ontario

FrankSullivan

Last month, NOSM was pleased to receive the Physician Services Foundation (PSI) Visiting Scholar, Dr. Frank Sullivan. Dr. Sullivan is currently the Director of the University of Toronto Practice-Based Research Network (UTOPIAN), which securely collects and reports on vital health records to improve the way chronic diseases and neurological conditions are managed. Dr. Sullivan travelled to Manitoulin Island to participate in ICEMEN's Conference on the Move, and gave a workshop to faculty members working on the Island who would like to engage further with research. Next, Dr. Sullivan travelled to Sault Ste. Marie where he participated in ICEMEN 2016 and the Northern Health Research Conference. There, he gave sessions about the power of what he calls "atomic data"--data that has the power to do for medicine what the atomic theory has done for chemistry.

IABC Gold Quill Award Photo

Earlier this month, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) was awarded a Gold Quill Award of Excellence from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) in recognition of the School’s promotion of the Standardized Patient (SP) program. Originally seeking 20 new Standardized Patients, NOSM implemented a campaign to recruit individuals interested in participating in the School’s SP program, wherein community members participate in the education of future physicians. As a result of the new advertising strategy, NOSM received 50 new applications for Standardized Patients. Congratulations to all those whose hard work was recognized by the IABC!

ICEMEN 2016 Concludes but the Dialogue Continues

ICEMEN Photo

Close to 350 participants from 12 countries were involved in one or all of Conference on the Move, ICEMEN 2016, the Indigenous Research Gathering, and the Northern Health Research Conference. On Thursday evening (June 23), we were joined by many locals in Sault Ste Marie for the NOSM 10th anniversary celebratory dinner Stories Around the Campfire. From the outstanding keynote addresses to oral presentations to the poster presentations to the workshops, there was genuine excitement in the sharing of knowledge and experience of social accountability, community engagement and Indigenous health in education, research and service. Congratulations, well done and thank you to conference co-chair Dr Marion Briggs and the many people who were involved in contributing to making ICEMEN 2016 such a phenomenal success.
