Welcome to the Education Corner of the NOSM Student Society, and a special welcome to the incoming class of 2010!
As you can imagine, concerns related to education are a top priority of NOSM students. The Education portfolio of the NOSMSS is a busy one. The Vice Presidents of Education on the NOSMSS are continually working on your behalf to make sure your ideas, suggestions, and concerns are addressed. At NOSM, we are fortunate to have a faculty and administration that is willing to listen to student feedback. As a result, students have the ability to bring about changes to policies and procedures that directly affect their educational experience.
Currently, your Vice President Education Sr. is Luke Fera, and Vice President Education Jr. is Heather Reid. We are both second-year students on the East campus, and are very passionate about education at NOSM. An important part of our role is to bring your ideas forward at NOSMSS meetings, where they are discussed with the rest of the NOSMSS executive members. Often, we will develop a position statement on a particular hot topic issue which can be presented to faculty or administration through the appropriate education committee (e.g., Undergraduate Medical Education Committee, Student Assessment and Promotion Committee). A position statement is voted on by the NOSMSS and therefore reflects the official stance of the NOSMSS on a particular issue. Examples of previous position statements can be found below. We have found that this “strength in numbers” approach is an effective method to bring about changes driven by your feedback. Furthermore, there are times when we will send a short survey with a variety of education-related issues to the students and present the results to faculty or administration. In the past, student response rates on these surveys have been excellent, and this gives us another method to relay what you think is important.
On a monthly basis, we meet with Dr. Lisa Graves, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education. We also communicate frequently with the student representatives on NOSM’s education committees.
Periodic education updates will either be posted here on the Education Corner or sent to you by e-mail.
Please feel free to contact us by e-mail or in person at any time! We are very approachable, and we are here to help you. We look forward to hearing from you!
