Bursaries, awards and / or their values might differ year to year. The Financial Aid Office will notify all students of what is available each year.

Open to Aboriginal Students Only

The following awards and bursaries are available to Aboriginal students only.

Charles and Helen Slattery Bursary

Established in 2005 by Helen Slattery. The Charles and Helen Slattery Bursary is awarded to a student of Aboriginal origin enrolled in any year at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.  The recipient must be a resident of a northern, rural, or remote community for a minimum of 10 years and demonstrate financial need.

Union Gas Aboriginal Bursary

Union Gas Transmission – Canada established this bursary to benefit a full time student of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.  The recipient must be a resident of a Northern, rural or remote community for a minimum of 10 years and demonstrate financial need and must be of Aboriginal or Métis descent.  

Jane Yesno Memorial Bursary

Established in 2008 by the family of Jane Yesno.  Awarded to a student in any year at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. The student recipient will be of Aboriginal or Metis descent. The student recipient will be an Ontario resident and demonstrate financial need.   

The Barwick Family Foundation Bursary

Established in 2005 by the Barwick Family Foundation.  The Barwick Family Foundation Bursary is awarded to an Aboriginal student in any year at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. The recipient must be a resident of a northern, rural, or remote community for a minimum of 10 years and demonstrate financial need.

Dr. Catherine Cervin Annual Award

The purpose of the “Dr. Catherine Cervin Annual Award” is to provide financial assistance annually to a student enrolled at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.

Dojack Family Bursary

Established in 2010 by the Dojack Family. Awarded to a student in any year at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. The student recipient will be a Northwestern Ontario resident, of Aboriginal or Métis descent and demonstrate financial need.     

Bonnie Moore Bursary

Established in 2009 by Bonnie Moore.  Awarded to a student in any year at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.  The recipient must be of Aboriginal or Metis descent. The student recipient will be an Ontario resident and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to a student registered at NOSM West (Lakehead University). If a NOSM West student does not fit the above criteria the award may be granted to a student registered through NOSM East (Laurentian University).

Clint Peltier Memorial Bursary

Dr. Elizabeth A. Schneider established this bursary to benefit a full time student of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine who is enrolled in year 1, 2, or 3 at the School of Medicine for the next year with successful completion of the current year.  The recipient must demonstrate financial need. The recipient must be of Aboriginal, Métis or Inuit descent.  The recipient must complete a 500-1000 word essay on a topic to be supplied each year. 

Wasaya Airways LP Bursary

Established in 2009 by Wasaya Airways LP.  Awarded to a student in any year at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.  The recipient must be of Aboriginal or Metis descent. The student recipient will be an Ontario resident and demonstrate financial need.
