About NOSM Education Research Communities

Welcome to Learner Affairs!

Learner Affairs operates in consultation to the academic program, but is a confidential service for individual students, at arm’s length from academics. Learner Affairs offers services and support which assist learners personally and financially. It also has a primary role in orientation, career development and support for student initiatives. We support learners by being accessible and responsive. Learner Affairs works with faculty and administration to facilitate a positive learning environment based on mutual respect.

Mission: Supporting Learners for Success

By providing the highest quality of services to learners, we will help to foster the best environment for learning in their personal and academic development as health professionals.

Primary Services

Personal Issues/Crisis - Learner Affairs takes a preventative and proactive approach in review and referral for personal issues. Learners may access services through a Learner Affairs Officer and  appropriate referrals may be suggested to external agencies and services, such as Lakehead University, CAMH, Morneau Shepell-fgi and our community partners

Financial Assistance – Financial Aid Officers provide information and support for the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP), financial planning, debt counseling, and information on bursaries, awards and scholarships.

Learner Advisor Program - The Learner Advisor program provdes learners with a system of academic and career support through whole group sessions on career development topics. Learners also have the opportunity to make individual contact with an Advisor by requesting support through Learner Affairs.

Professional/Personal/Career Development - Learner Affairs has a four year career plan "Career on Track" that assists learners in making career decisions. This includes noon hour and evening sessions on career specialties and issues, peer and faculty support and career counseling through Learner Affairs. Specialty Interest Groups and the NOSM Student Society also offer sessions that support this area.

Support for Students – Learner Affairs is the formal liaison with the NOSM Student Society on a wide range of issues that aid their initiatives. Learner Affairs works in consultation with the Undergraduate Medical Education Program to ensure that there is information and links available to learners in reference to their administrative, academic and personal needs.

Event support - Orientation and Student Society events are supported through our office.

Program/Policy Development - Learner Affairs representatives participate on multiple committees, offering opinion on group issues, representing confidential individual needs, student support or environment policy issues.
