Interprofessional Education Program
The Interprofessional Education Program is administered by the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM).
Interprofessional education and collaborative practice initiatives have grown tremendously across Canada and internationally over the past ten years. The program has grown as a partnership with Health Sciences Academic Programs across Ontario.
NOSM’s Interprofessional Educaltion Program introduces learners to the skills necessary to function as a member of a quality health care team and develop the competencies needed to be a team member. The program addresses recruitment and retention with a focus on education that highlights the geographic, demographic, linguistic and cultural realities of Northern Ontario. Utilizing a variety of learning strategies within a community-oriented curriculum, teams of health professional learners experience a learner-centred approach to collaboration and problem solving.
Teams of learners including audiology, dietetics, health promotion, kinesiology, midwifery, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physiotherapy, social work and speech language pathology are brought together for weekly tutorial sessions.
Learners from Southern Ontario academic sites may have participated in sessions at their home campus prior to coming North. Clinical placements are the vehicles that bring these learners North to participate in an exceptional learning experience.
Learners currently attending a Southern academic health sciences program will have the Northern tutorial session integrated with the clinical placement. The placement remains an academic requirement and responsibility but NOSM staff work in collaboration with each University to facilitate the learning experience in the North.
NOSM preceptors are accomplished practitioners with a range of health care experience in a variety of settings. They are highly skilled and enthusiastic about working with learners.
The Northern tutorials abound with unique learning experiences such as learner-developed cases, role presentations and demonstrations, cultural learning and many team activities.
