The Northern Elective Program is open to all medical students in their clerkship years and residents currently attending an Ontario medical school. Clinical placements vary in length from two weeks or greater.

Important Funding Assistance

***PLEASE NOTE: The following policies are effective May 25, 2015. Additional information is available here.

Visiting learners are responsible for their travel costs and housing if required. However, should NOSM permanent housing be available for a rotation in the assigned community, learners may have access to NOSM housing at a subsidized rate of $125/week. That said, NOSM housing cannot be guaranteed until 4-8 weeks prior to the start of the rotation and we encourage learners to secure housing options. When possible, NOSM will provide contact information to community contacts to assist learners with sourcing housing in Northern Ontario communities.

A teaching stipend will be paid to your preceptor by NOSM on your behalf.

Application Requirements

All applications must be submitted online. To submit an application please see the "Application" section located below.

  1. You are provided with three Elective placement choices within the application format. If you state in the “comment” field that you are open to alternative locations in your requested discipline, this latitude would improve your placement success.
  2. Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis and observe the following submission deadline dates:
  • For clinical rotation requests between January 1–August 31, applications must be submitted by October 31.
  • For clinical rotation requests between September 1–December 31, applications must be submitted by July 15.

     4.  If you wish to submit an application after the submission deadlines mentioned above, please contact Elise Rheaume (4 weeks >) or Carrie Cybulski (2 or 3 weeks) first in order to discuss your possibilities to apply.

To ensure a successful elective placement:

**Undergraduate applications must be submitted 16 weeks prior to the anticipated start date, no exceptions.

**Postgraduate applications must be submitted 8 weeks prior to the anticipated start date, no exceptions.

Special Notes

Although some learners may contact preceptors directly to discuss placement learning objectives, learners should refrain from setting elective dates with a preceptor. Our internal administrative process assures that all learners have equitable access to the available placement opportunities in Northern Ontario.
