OverviewThe Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) is Canada’s newest medical school for the 21st Century. Our education and training programs span the life cycle of a physician practicing in Northern Ontario. NOSM’s curriculum is unique among medical schools because it is based entirely on a distributed community instructional model. This model allows widely distributed human and instructional resources to be utilized independent of time and place in community partner locations across the North. This Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is fully supported by the latest technologies such as videoconferencing, webcasting, online tutorials, as well as the physical and the virtual resources available through the Health Information Resource Centre (HIRC). In keeping with its mandate to provide innovative medical education programs that are responsive to the needs of students and to the health care needs of the people of Northern Ontario, NOSM offers Academic programs in the areas of Clinical Sciences, Human Sciences and Medical Sciences. Clinical Sciences curriculum addresses the clinical aspects of medicine such as Anesthesia, Pediatrics, and Surgery to name a few. The Human Sciences seek to have a broad understanding of human health based on utilizing methods of reasoning and compassion and focus on areas such as aboriginal health, francophone health, and northern and rural health. The Medical Sciences addresses basic medical science, including topics such as anatomy, biochemistry, and microbiology. MD ProgramOur innovative undergraduate MD program involves students learning in small groups, in distributed learning sites supported by broadband communication information technology. The curriculum is clinically driven, while ensuring students gain a strong grounding in core knowledge and skills including the basic sciences. Residency ProgramsResidency Programs are offered by NOSM in communities throughout Northern Ontario through collaboration with McMaster University and the University of Ottawa. In addition, NOSM’s Family Medicine Residents of the Canadian Shield (FM RoCS) program is Canada’s newest in 33 years, marking a milestone in the history of Northern Ontario medicine. Continuing Health Professional EducationTo continue the learning cycle, NOSM assists with Continuing Health Professional Education (CHPE) for physicians in Northern Ontario through a robust professional development calendar. NOSM’s annual Health Professional Development Calendar has over 600 educational events covering faculty development, continuing professional development, interprofessional education and much more. Interprofessional Education ProgramsNOSM’s Interprofessional Education Program (IEP) learning opportunities enhance the skills necessary to function as a member of a quality health-care team and develop the competencies needed to be a team member.
