Conflict of Interest
Conflict of Interest and bias in educational content are issues that the College of Family Physicians and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons have worked hard to heighten stakeholder awareness of over the last several year. College and CACME guidelines on relationships with industry and the CMA and Rx&D Code of Ethics have all influenced the policy and guidelines set by the CEPD Office. In November 2013 NOSM's Conflict of Interest Policy was released with full approval from the NOSM Board of Directors. Planning Committee members are encouraged to review the NOSM Conflict of Interest Policy for guidance regarding bias, relationship with industry and sponsorship as it relates to the development of educational programs.
Planning Committee members and speakers must all complete the CEPD Declaration of Conflict of Interest form on an annual basis. This form allows for planning committee awareness of member and/or speaker affiliations that may cause a perception of bias throughout an education event. Foreknowledge of the affiliations will ensure that the planning committee has the opportunity to discuss the actions that will be taken to ensure that any bias is mitigated. These are the discussions that will inform slide three of the conflict of interest slides, located at the start of every learning activity.
Planning Committees will ensure the following:
- All planning committee members complete the Declaration of Conflict of Interest form on an annual basis.
- All speakers complete the Declaration of Conflict of Interest form on an annual basis.
- The completed Declaration of Conflict of Interest forms will be maintained in the CEPD Office, so that planning committee members and speakers will only be approached to complete the document on an annual basis.
- Where a potential conflict of interest is identified, the planning committee will discuss how any bias that could be perceived will be mitigated.
- All speakers will be provided the Conflict of Interest slide templates and will be asked to include them as the first three slides of their presentation. Slide one identifies affiliations that could influence the presentation; slide two identifies what bias could be perceived as a result of the bias, and the planning committee will indicate in slide three, how this potential for bias has been mitigated.
- Presentations are reviewed by the planning committee and submitted to the CEPD Office seven days prior to the education event.
