PRINCIPLES: 

A new medical school for the whole of Northern Ontario, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine is a joint initiative between Lakehead and Laurentian Universities. With main campuses in Thunder Bay and Sudbury, the school has multiple teaching and research sites distributed across Northern Ontario, in large and small communities. The School contributes to improving the health of people in Northern Ontario.

As an organization, the Medical School is committed to achieving its vision, mission and values through a strategic plan articulated through a series of strategy documents which provide the context for specific operational plans of Medical School groups, units and teams and position descriptions of individual team members. This position’s contribution will be measured by its ability to contribute to the achievement of the goals, vision and mission of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.

Section Chairs have overall responsibility for the teaching and research conducted by the members of their section. This includes assisting the School in identifying and assigning teaching resources for undergraduate, postgraduate, elective and continuing health professional education.

Section Chairs report to the Division Head of Clinical Sciences in the Faculty Affairs Unit.

There are also working relationships with Post Graduate Program Directors and Coordinators, Associate Deans of Undergraduate Medical Education, Postgraduate Education and CHPE, other Section Heads, Phase Coordinators, Hospital Site Education Coordinators and Hospital Scheduling Officers.

The following are the Sections of the NOSM Division of Clinical Science:

  • Anesthesia - vacant 
  • Child Health - vacant 
  • Emergency Medicine - vacant 
  • Family Medicine - filled 
  • Health Sciences - filled 
  • Internal Medicine - filled 
  • Psychiatry - filled 
  • Surgery - vacant 
  • Women’s Health - vacant 

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Chair will assist the Division Head of Clinical Science in the academic leadership of the school specifically in the areas of:

  • Recruitment
  • Mentoring
  • Assignment of clinical teaching
  • Evaluation of Faculty
  • Determination of faculty rank at appointment
  • Promotion of Clinical Faculty

 

The Section Chairs will advise the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education concerning:

  • Curriculum content specific to their discipline or specialty
  • Development of elective experiences for undergraduate learners
  • Undergraduate student assessment practices consistent with curriculum requirements
  • Resources available for teaching undergraduate learners

The Section Chairs will advise the Associate Dean of Postgraduate Education concerning:

  • Physician teacher human resources
  • Resources available for teaching postgraduate learners

 

 

The Section Chairs will advise the Associate Dean CHPE concerning:

  • Faculty resources
  • Faculty expertise
  • Clerkship Leads, Research Director, Clinician Section Members report to the Section Chair

 

Education: 

  • An MD in one of the Medical Sciences from a recognized university with Canadian accreditation for all Section Chairs with the exception of Health Sciences that requires a registered allied health professional.
     

Experience: 

  • Proven experience in academic leadership
  • Experience in medical education or related field is highly desirable
  • Team leadership experience required
  • A minimum of two years supervisory experience.

 

Language: 

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension).
  • French/Aboriginal language skills would be a considerable asset.
