Student with iPadNOSM's Incoming Medical Students Will Use iPads to Access Interactive Medical Applications and CollaborateThe Northern Ontario School of Medicine's (NOSM) Entry Class of 2010 have started their classes well equipped to access interactive, experiential medical applications and references, no matter where they may be studying as part of NOSM's distributed, community-engaged medical education model. "The iPads will also provide the students with flexible access to innovative applications, curriculum resources and collaboration tools," says NOSM's Director of Technology and Information Management Support, Tariq Al-Idrissi. NOSM is the first medical school in Canada, and the third in North America, to distribute iPads to medical students as part of their technology package, which is paid for by student technology fees.

Kap OWeekNOSM Welcomes 64 New M.D. StudentsToday officially marks the first day of classes for 64 new medical students at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM), following a week of exposure to the geographic, social, cultural, and linguistic diversity of Northern Ontario. During their unique Orientation Week, the students traveled to several Northern Ontario communities, participated in working sessions, and became acquainted with their new lives as medical students. Physician AssistantNOSM Congratulates New Family Health Teams The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) congratulates the latest 30 communities that have been successful in their application for Family Health Teams in Ontario. Of the 30 most recently granted approval by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, six communities are located in Northern Ontario where NOSM learners undertake clinical training. NOSM sends a special congratulations to Blind River, Sault Ste. Marie, New Liskeard, Sturgeon Falls, Powassan, and Thunder Bay, and looks forward to future collaborations with these new Family Health Teams. Physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, social workers and dieticians are brought together in Family Health Teams to offer team-based, patient-centred care.

Northern Ontario School of Medicine outside signNOSM’s Newest M.D. Students to Attend Dinner Hosted by Thunder Bay Métis Council and School’s Aboriginal Reference Group The Northern Ontario School of Medicine’s (NOSM) entry class of 2010 will be treated to a “Meet and Greet Dinner” later today at the Thunder Bay Métis Community Centre in Thunder Bay, hosted by the Thunder Bay Métis Council and the School’s Aboriginal Reference Group. The Thunder Bay Métis Council is one of 30 chartered communities that are included in the Métis Nation of Ontario.Read more

1 NOSM-Update-For-WebNOSM Negotiations with OPSEU Staff Unit Impacted by Public Sector Compensation RestraintsLike the rest of the broader public sector, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) is impacted by recent Ontario government legislation and policy statements regarding compensation restraints for employees. With regard to bargaining unit employees, the government’s policy statement lays out a clear expectation that “new collective agreements will be of at least two years duration and provide no net increase in compensation for at least two years.” Read more

NOSMNOSM to Continue Education Programs During Labour Disruption The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) is currently experiencing a legal strike of its Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) Staff Unit. The 152 members included in the OPSEU Staff Unit work in office, clerical, administrative, technical and service positions. Measures have been taken to ensure all scheduled education programs will continue. NOSM is making every effort to minimize disruptions for our learners, and appreciates the patience of its many valued partners and stakeholders during this time.
