  1. How do I access E-Resources from off-campus?

In order to access any of the library’s licensed resources, you will be prompted to enter a NOSM username & password. This is issued to all faculty, residents, students & staff of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. This is the same information used to access MyNOSM and WebAdvisor.
  1. I’ve lost/forgotten my NOSM Username & Password. How do I retrieve it?

If you’ve forgotten your username or password, please contact the Help Desk nosmhelpdesk@nosm.ca. The Technology Unit will be able to provide you with the information you require to access library  resources.
  1. I can access the most recent article of a journal but an older article, in the same journal, is not available?

Vendors often split their e-journal packages between current content and archival content (backfiles). As such, you may be able to access recent articles from a journal but when you click on an article from 1990, access is denied. The typical cut-off date is between 1993 and 1995.

As backfiles can be costly, the Library must consider such purchases when appropriate for the collection and when financially feasible.

You can request any article that is not available online via our Interlibrary Loan Service. The article will be obtained at no cost to you.
  1. When searching a database I see a “Get-It” button. When I click this button, I cannot access the article even though I know the library subscribes to the journal. What is this button and why doesn’t it work?

We are partnered with Laurentian University & Lakehead University’s Libraries. Both of our partners use a software product called SFX, which allows them to link their full-text holdings to their databases. This “Get-It” button allows users to seamlessly access the full-text from any database. Unfortunately, that button cannot be activated for us and our holdings will not appear when you click on that button. You may be able to access the full-text, but it is the full-text of either Lakehead or Laurentian.

It is best to check our E-Journals or the Library Catalogue to ascertain if we do indeed have the full-text.

The “Get-It” button will only appear in databases that the Library shares with Laurentian & Lakehead, such as CINAHL or MEDLINE.

  1. I’m using a MAC or Google Chrome to access resources and keep running into error messages or am randomly directed back to the library’s homepage when I click on a link? Should I be using a different browser?

The library recommends using either Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox to access E-Resources. This is because the majority of our internally and externally managed resources are most compatible with these browsers.
